ABOUT

Shelly Phelps and the Storm

From bluesy power ballads to foot-stomping soulful rock

If songs are bones, Shelly’s primal vocals are their flesh and soul. And if you’re there next time she takes the stage, don’t expect to hear her sing. Expect to collide with the entire arc of her existence. Expect to walk away with it dripping all over you.

When Shelly says, “I would call myself a soul singer,” what she means is she wrote her first song when she was six and hasn’t been able to quit since.

What she means is that life is hard, “but we’re all gonna be okay because we’re in it together.” And connecting with each other through music that expresses shared truth makes it easier.

What she means is that for her, music is like breathing. “I will do this until I physically can’t anymore.”

Over time Shelly Phelps and the Storm have alchemized all of what Shelly means with diverse influences like R&B, retro soul, and rock into a genre-defying sound that is gutsy and guttural, smokey and soulful.

For long-time fans, tracks on their upcoming Singing the Bones album – set for release in 2023 – will carry the band's signature sound, but with a more focused edge. Watch for Than Medlam telling the story on guitar, Jeff Holmes bringing his low rumble on drums, and Joey Albin holding it all together on bass.

“Music is a life-long journey,” Shelly says. “Your music changes because you change, you grow, you get deeper.”

While the sound and style have been honed, Shelly’s rib-crunching lyrics continue to carve truth from the human condition with all the themes she’s known for: desire, rebellion, love, loss, history, grief, rebirth, and renewal.

Consider these lines from the band’s newly-released single, “Legendary”:

Tear down my house, I’ll build an empire
Blow out my flame, I’ll set the world on fire
Back me against the wall
You can push me but I will not fall
And every time you try to erase my name
I become legendary

And if you get a chance to see them live, don’t expect to go “see a band.” Expect an immersive, transcendental, lay-down-your-burdens experience that will leave you different than when you came. Expect the dark, warm threads of collaboration and connection to bind you together. Expect to be pushed off a cliff, and then loved back to safety. That is the soul of Shelly Phelps and the Storm.
